Every university in the Netherlands has its own rules and procedures regarding doctoral degrees. Some are relevant when it comes to the dissertation printing:
Unfortunately, there are no general rules about the above points and every university interprets this differently, including the UvA. Here we will discuss the main points to keep in mind when having your dissertation printed for your PhD at the UvA.
The most important thing is that you cannot have the dissertation printed before the dean has signed the statement of approval. A proof is of course always possible, but the print run requires this statement. If the statement does not come after all and if something has to be changed in the dissertation, this can cause a problem. The title page must also meet some formal requirements. When setting the provisional date, you will be asked to fill in the title of your dissertation. Upon confirmation of the provisional date, you will receive the title page as it should be placed in your dissertation from Bureau Pedel.
The PhD regulations stipulate that you must submit 3 printed copies of your dissertation to Bureau Pedel no later than 4 weeks before the defense date. In addition, you must send a paper or digital version of the dissertation to the dean, the chairperson of the PhD ceremony, the supervisor(s), any co-supervisor(s), the voting members of the PhD committee, and any guest opponent(s). The dean determines whether this should be a printed copy or whether a digital version will suffice.
Positions are optional. The propositions are not part of the dissertation and are supplied loose-leaf. The number of propositions is a minimum of six and a maximum of eleven, of which at least six relate to the faculty's academic field. The propositions require the approval of the supervisor.
It is not mandatory to include an ISBN in the dissertation. However, if you still want this, we can of course arrange this for you.
For more background information, it is best to take a look at the Doctorate Regulations or contact the Board of Doctorate Affairs. It is of course best to contact us for the preparation and printing of your dissertation.
